Becoming Naka Power (Yellowknife) and Naka Power (NWT)

Naka. ("nah-kah")

In most Dene First Nations languages, Naka is the word for the unique phenomenon known as the aurora borealis, or northern lights.

The late Dene Chief Edward Sangris once spoke of the northern lights as a powerful beacon, connecting communities and guiding him home.

We are proud to say that’s what Naka Power (Yellowknife) and Naka Power (NWT) do. We deliver safe and reliable power to communities across the Northwest Territories, connecting neighbours and lighting their way.

Naka Power (Yellowknife) and Naka Power (NWT) are the new brand names for the company which is a joint partnership between Denendeh Investments Incorporated (DII) and ATCO. Northland Utilities has been serving customers in the Northwest Territories for more than 70 years and has been in partnership with DII for over 35 of those years. Today we are 50/50 partners.

This joint partnership means DII has been able to invest in Indigenous organizations and initiatives that contribute to sustainable economic and social development.

Naka Power (Yellowknife) and Naka Power (NWT) - names that reflect our shared values and priorities. Companies that power the North. Our home.
